Pench Wildlife

Wild Animals

The exotic Pench Tiger Reserve has an area of 758 Sq. kms. The forest types are Southern Indian tropical moist deciduous with a mix of tropical dry deciduous teak here and there. The grasslands at Pench are not as extensive as in Kanha National Park. The area has number of rivulets many of which are seasonal. The Pench River which gives the park its name dries by April end leaving a number of scattered pools which serve as crucial water sources for thirsty wild animals in Pench jungles. The Pench Reservoir named Totlah Doh dam is the lifeline of the ecosystem of this nature park which is a major water source during the hot summers.

The prey base especially deer is high in dense forest belt adjoining the Pench River making it an ideal area to trek tigers. Leopard are in good numbers but inhabits the buffer zone. With luck a panther can be seen in the core zone of the park. Jungle cats are common sight in the core and buffer zones but rare Leopard cat, Indian civets, ratels, and porcupines are less seen as they are nocturnal species.

Pench is one of the most popular tiger parks in the country. Alongside the tiger live Wild Dogs, Wild Boars, Nilgai, Chital or Spotted Deer , Four-horned Antelope, Leopards, Langur and Fox. The park is very rich in bird life with over 250 species like Francolins, Owls, Raptors, Barbets, Ducks, Minivets, Oriole, Waterhen and Kingfishers can be seen. During winter months the numbers increase as migratory birds arrive.
