Wild Animals
The exotic Pench Tiger Reserve has an area of 758 Sq. kms. The forest types are Southern Indian tropical moist deciduous with a mix of tropical dry deciduous
teak here and there. The grasslands at Pench are not as extensive as in Kanha National Park. The area has number of rivulets many of which are seasonal. The
Pench River which gives the park its name dries by April end leaving a number of scattered
pools which serve as crucial water sources for thirsty wild animals in Pench jungles. The
Pench Reservoir named Totlah Doh dam is the lifeline of the ecosystem of this nature park which is a
major water source during the hot summers.
The prey base especially deer is high in dense forest belt adjoining the Pench River making it an ideal area to trek tigers. Leopard
are in good numbers but inhabits the buffer zone. With luck a panther can be seen in the core zone of the park. Jungle
cats are common sight in the core and buffer zones but rare Leopard cat, Indian civets, ratels,
and porcupines are less seen as they are nocturnal species.
Pench is one of the most popular
tiger parks in the country. Alongside the tiger live
Wild Dogs, Wild Boars,
Nilgai, Chital or Spotted Deer , Four-horned
Antelope, Leopards,
Langur and Fox. The park
is very rich in bird life with over
250 species like Francolins, Owls, Raptors, Barbets,
Ducks, Minivets,
Oriole, Waterhen and
Kingfishers can be seen. During winter months the numbers increase as migratory birds arrive.
